The Design of Implicit Interactions Making Interactive Objects Less Obnoxious

چکیده
Implicit interactions represent an important research frontier in interaction design. Whereas traditional interaction design has focused on explicit interactions, where the use of computers and interactive products rely on explicit input and output, implicit interactions occur without the behest or awareness of the user. This article outlines implicit interactions as an emerging area of applied design research and provides guidance to designers of interactive objects and systems. We provide a framework that characterizes interactions by attentional demand and initiative, and present a methodology for generalizing implicit interaction techniques through the development and use of interaction patterns and analogues.

The Design of Implicit Interactions: Making Interactive Systems Less Obnoxious
Introduction Imagine, for a second, a doorman who behaves as automatic doors do. He does not acknowledge you when you approach or pass by. He gives no hint which door can or will open—until you wander within six feet of the door, whereupon he flings the door wide open. If you arrived after hours, you might stand in front of the doors for awhile before you realize that the doors are locked, beca...
متن کاملSpeeding Up Grid-Data Generation for Polygonisation of Implicit Surfaces
Implicit surfaces are particularly suitable for design and animation of smoothly blended objects that deform during motion. Such objects change their shape due to external forces, deform during collisions with other objects or conform to their environment. They are also able to squash and stretch, an effect essential in traditional animation yet often lacking in computer animation. However, vis...

Implicit surfaces have received increased attention in the design and animation of 3D objects, since they posses some useful advantages over the traditional parametric surfaces. However, interactive design of such surfaces generally suffers from the relatively slow display speed and lack of efficient control facilities. This paper experiments the combination of the implicit surface technique an...
متن کاملSupporting Sensemaking of Complex Objects with Visualizations: Visibility and Complementarity of Interactions
Making sense of complex objects is difficult, and typically requires the use of external representations to support cognitive demands while reasoning about the objects. Visualizations are one type of external representation that can be used to support sensemaking activities. In this paper, we investigate the role of two design strategies in making the interactive features of visualizations more...
متن کاملThe Design of Implicit Interactions
People rely on implicit interaction in their everyday interactions with one another to exchange queries, offers, responses, and feedback without explicit communication. A look with the eyes, a wave of the hand, the lift of the door handle—small moves can do a lot to enable joint action with elegance and economy. This work puts forward a theory that these implicit patterns of interaction with on...
